The Sun emits various forms of light, including visible light that we can see, as well as invisible ultraviolet (UV) radiation. While UV radiation is not visible to the naked eye, it can damage our skin and even lead to skin cancer. Sunscreens work to protect us from this harmful UV radiation. In this PLTW activity, each team explored how nanotechnology enhances the properties of sunscreens. The students then compared the characteristics of non-nano-enhanced and nano-enhanced sunscreens, and conducted an investigation to evaluate the effectiveness of both.

In this PLTW lesson, students explored the fascinating chemical process that occurs when salt is added to ice. Through hands-on experiments grounded in applied chemistry principles, they discovered the intriguing effects of this interaction. This engaging activity not only deepened their understanding of the underlying scientific concepts, but also allowed them to apply this knowledge to make their own homemade ice cream - a delicious reward for their efforts.
